According to Ishai Sharon, the last 10 days the market price has been extremely low, this was witnessed more in the sales of all special red roses. The major reasons for this situation as noted by Ishai were:
- The floral market had 2 short weeks; week 21 and week 23 only had 4 sale days instead of the normal 5 days. A lot of people in Europe are also going for the long weekend vacation therefore Ishai believes that the number of potential customers is therefore likely to drop.
- Very hot weather occurred on week 20-21 which resulted in the high production of local roses as well as for other flowers. This created less demand in the markets.
- The markets in Europe also received a large supply of flowers from the Kenyan and Ethiopian growers which caused low prices to be witnessed in those markets.
Over and above this situation, Ishai informed us that today there was an unfortunate malfunction on all clocks that lasted for 2 hours starting from 07:00 till 09:00 which caused the prices to completely collapse. As a result Ishai tells us that a lot of buyers especially those on Klok Van Afstand (KOA), who actually happen to be clients in Europe that buy from distance regrettably decided not to wait for the malfunction to be rectified but opted to come back for tomorrow’s clock.
Weather Forecast
The weather forecast in Europe for the next 10 days is expected to be cooler and rainy. In Africa we are expecting low production to come from Kenyan and Ethiopian growers as a reaction of the low prices seen across all European flower markets. However Ishai is quick to assure all growers that the prices are expected to improve in the coming weeks. He further adds, “In the next coming weeks we expect extra demands to be created as schools terms are coming to end, as well as the student’s days that will be taking place in Scandinavia.”
